1. Encourage receptive language (understanding and following directions) by asking the child to get the banana (from a choice of 2 or 3).
2. Encourage expressive language by asking the child to repeat the name of the food, say "do you want___mommy?" putting more words together, saying "I want ___" versus just grabbing, and increasing vocabulary (versus calling all beverages milk).
3. Sort the foods by colors or categories such as fruit or dessert
4. Math skills -- count the numbers of foods
5.Gross motor skills can be encouraged by putting the food in shopping cart and going "shopping"
6. Creative play is encouraged by playing pretend at the grocery store, restaurant or kitchen at home.
